El golf, que está en el centro de la historia de Sotogrande desde su fundación hasta hoy, es un deporte multidimensional.
Más de una vez hemos comentado en estas páginas que su dimensión económica es muy considerable, por el empleo que genera y los recursos que moviliza en turismo y hostelería de alta calidad. Pero el golf también influye en otras dimensiones de la vida, no siempre reconocidas.
Quizá la más distorsionada es su supuesta hostilidad al medio ambiente, cuando la realidad es justo la contraria, y los golfistas son amigos y no adversarios del cuidado de la ecología.
Tiene también una dimensión cultural, y ha habido, por ejemplo, películas sobre el golf con actores o directores famosos, como The Legend of Bagger Vance o Tin Cu. No han faltado grandes escritores que abordaron el tema, como John Updike, y en particular P.G. Wodehouse, cuyas páginas sobre el golf han hecho disfrutar a varias generaciones de lectores y jugadores. Mi historia favorita, y sospecho que la de muchas otras personas, es un delicioso relato titulado The Clicking of Cuthbert.
Como está usted leyendo El Periódico de Sotogrande, cabe mencionar a una leyenda del periodismo sobre el golf, y un sobresaliente amateur: Bernard Darwin, que además era nieto del célebre naturalista Charles Darwin.
La dimensión social del golf puede ser mencionada, porque en todo el mundo es un deporte que no solo atrae a decenas de millones de mujeres y hombres de toda condición, sino que sus clubes son centros de una educada vida social.
Para terminar, no olvidemos la dimensión política. Por un lado, los propios políticos que lo practican, a veces con frecuencia. Estados Unidos se destaca especialmente por la afición a este deporte de sus presidentes, desde Eisenhower hasta Donald Trump. En España lo han practicado todos nuestros reyes en el último siglo, desde Alfonso XIII en adelante, incluyendo a don Juan de Borbón.
Independientemente de las autoridades, la política y el golf tienen otra conexión interesante, porque los jugadores respetan las reglas y quieren que los dejen en paz. En este aspecto, como en otros, los políticos podrían imitar a los ciudadanos y atender a sus deseos.
Multidimensional golf
Golf, which has been at the centre of Sotogrande’s history since it was founded until now, is a multidimensional sport.
More than once, we have noted in these pages that its economic dimension is highly considerable, due to the employment it generates and the resources it mobilises in tourism and high quality hospitality. However, golf also influences other dimensions of life, which aren’t always recognised.
Perhaps the most distorted is its alleged hostility to the environment, when the reality is quite the contrary, golfers are friends and not enemies of looking after the environment.
It also has a cultural dimension, and for example, there have been films about golf with famous actors and directors, such as The Legend of Bagger Vance and Tin Cu There have been no shortage of major writers who have tackled the topic, such as John Updike, and in particular P.G. Wodehouse, whose pages on golf have delighted several generations of readers and players. My favourite story, and I suspect it is for many other people, is a wonderful story entitled The Clicking of Cuthbert.

The social dimension of golf can be mentioned, because around the world it is a sport that not only attracts tens of millions of people of all types, but also because its clubs are centres for well-mannered social life.
To finish, we shouldn’t forget its political dimension. On one hand, the politicians themselves who play it, sometimes often. The United States in particular stands out for the passion towards this sport from its presidents, from Eisenhower to Donald Trump. In Spain it has been played by practically all our kings in the last century, from Alfonso XIII on, including Don Juan de Borbón.
Aside from authorities, politics and golf have another interesting connection, because the players respect the rules and want to be left in peace. In this regard, as in others, politicians can imitate citizens and meet their wishes.
